Concept and activities

Friskis&Svettis is one of Sweden’s largest chains of fitness centers. From the first "jympa" session, which was held in Stockholm in 1978, Friskis&Svettis has grown into an organization with 153 local centers in 10 countries and going on for 442.782 members.

Friskis&Svettis’ concept is to offer pleasurable and readily accessible high-quality training for everyone. We want to encourage as many people as possible to adopt a positive, active lifestyle.

Every day Friskis&Svettis’ concept involves more than 16.000 staff who work on a non-profit basis: leaders, instructors, hosts and committee members. Friskis&Svettis’ various local centers develop their activities in a financially independent fashion. The larger centers have their own premises and offer a wide range of activities: a large number of different "jympa" sessions, weight training in the gym and spin. A smaller center, which may rent a gymnasium in a school a few days each week, will have several "jympa" sessions on its timetable.

Regardless of the external appearance of the center, the type of high-quality training activity is the same. Basic and intermediate "jympa" sessions are available at all centers.

 Friskis&Svettis training

Friskis&Svettis "jympa" has three levels of intensity – basic, intermediate and intensive. The training concept is based on music, pleasure in movement and positive leadership.

Basic and intermediate "jympa" are offered by all centers. Strength, pulse and relaxation "jympa" variants, in which the focus is on one of the training qualities, are available if you wish to engage in more specialized training. These can be provided at both basic and intermediate level.

There are also "jympa" sessions in which we adapt the basic concept to suit different needs and interests such as back, junior and pregnant "jympa". "Jympa" for people with disabilities is available at several centers.

 Friskis&Svettis organisation

Friskis&Svettis has trained its own leaders ever since it began in 1978. This has been an essential condition for maintaining high quality and for communicating the values that Friskis&Svettis represents.

Leaders and instructors are recruited by the local Friskis&Svettis center on the basis of both interviews and tests in music and movement.

The basic training covers aspects such as "jympa", gym, jogging and spin. Training courses for "jympa", gym and spin are divided into two stages. Stage 1, over four days, is completed by everyone; while stage 2, over 3-6 days, concentrates entirely on the form of training that the participant will lead or give instruction in. Those who complete the basic training are awarded a diploma after passing practical and theoretical tests.

The sessions, which are based on music and movement, are prepared by each leader individually. Each session is unique, therefore, and this personal stamp is an important part of the Friskis&Svettis training concept.

All Friskis&Svettis leaders are regularly monitored, at least once a year, by specially trained monitors.

After completing the basic training, around twenty different further training courses are available. Other Friskis&Svettis staff are also trained by Friskis&Svettis.

 Friskis&Svettis history. How it began

Friskis&Svettis started from an idea that the sports movement and health care sector could make better use of each other’s knowledge. Friskis&Svettis became an example of how people could work more closely with one another and gather experience, knowledge and enthusiasm under one and the same roof. Friskis&Svettis wished to create a bridge between health care and keep-fit activities.

Friskis is responsible for one part of the operation, and Svettis for another. Friskis offers the possibility of activities for those who, for one reason or another, are unable to participate in ordinary "jympa".

In Friskis&Svettis, "&" is the most important element. The aim is gradually to channel people from Friskis to ordinary "jympa". We seek to offer so many different forms of training that everyone should be able to find something to suit them, regardless of whether you have recently injured yourself, are fit, unfit, old or young.

Friskis&Svettis adopted a new approach and utilized the group dynamic to create sensations. People are built for movement, although movement must also be fun if you are to continue.
